Balancing environmental, financial and social sustainability is common to all of our projects.

It also forms a key driver for projects we do and how we integrate into the UK planning process . The majority of our work though centres around design and implementation of the environmental aspect.



Aiming for environmentally sustainable design solutions is a key parameter in our design concept work . A full appraisal of what may be practically possible is carried out in the initial stages of all projects to identify key principles that will need to be adhered to later on in the design process.

This enables a road map of sustainable solutions to be written on each individual project.

Clients are advised at an early stage on what their options are and can include not just environmental technology but simple and economical passive approaches such as orientation and building section.

We like to go beyond current government policy where possible without incurring additional cost which is possible to do if an energy design appraisal is built into the briefing process.

Our sustainable design approach centres round the reduction in carbon usage and therefore concentrates on reduced energy use and not energy generation on site.

Our Low Carbon parameters include –

  • Correct solar building orientation with solar panel retrofit options where possible.
  • Passive solar control in building section.
  • High Airtightness beyond building regs.
  • High insulation of the Building Fabric.
  • Low tech controlled natural Ventilation.
  • Heat Recovery where possible.

We only consider renewable energy options as last resort and prefer to use budgets to reduce energy usage.

We are currently researching opportunities for using passivhaus design approach which embodies low carbon usage design concepts.

We fully appraise what materials we specify on our buildings and, if appropriate and affordable, are incorporated. We regularly access the BRE Green guide to specification as a standard reference.

We are fully conversant with requirements of BREEAM assessment and the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Code For Sustainable Homes

DAP Architecture are trained and registered Code For Sustainable Homes Assessors and Consultants.

The Code aims to reduce carbon emissions in new buildings and encourages higher standards of sustainable design. It is often a mandatory requirement of local councils and housing authorities, with projects given a star rating of 1-6, measuring the overall performance when scored alongside 9 categories.

At DAP Architecture we use our expertise in the Code and sustainability in order to guide and consult clients towards achieving the required standard and provide full in house BRE registered assessments, issuing certificates upon completion.


SAP and U-Value Calculations

DAP Architecture are trained and experienced in providing SAP 2012 calculations and elemental U-Value Calculations for building regulation approval using BRE approved software.

Not only is this a requirement for all new domestic buildings, but it means, at DAP Architecture, we can deliver the most effective and sustainable design solutions by incorporating our knowledge of SAP and the importance of reducing C02 emissions at the early stages of concept design.
